Title: Milk crates aren't just for farmers anymore!

For years I've seen folks hauling around all sorts of stuff in "appropriated" milk crates. Tough, everywhere, and very handy.
I found this company that makes milk crates in all kinds of colors and sizes, which would make great carriers for tools and parts. I thought I'd get some in several colors, and put specific tools in a color, thus making it easy to be a handyman. Would save having to dig out A/C stuff following a plumbing job following a carpenters job. The handyman thing never came together, but I bought a trio of their half crates in gray to fill in empty areas in my Astrovan. Figured if I had to bug out, storing canned food and bottled water would be easier than cardboard boxes.

They can hold alot, have the carry handles built in making them easy to grab - and are stackable too! Here's what the drivers side rear shelf of the van looks like now.

Can't recommend them highly enough.

I had to stock up on bottled water today so I thought I'd give the milk crates a try. I needed to pick up 9 gallons, and had some more errands to do. So I figured I'd put the gallon jugs into the crates so as not to have them rolling around in the back of the van with every turn. They worked great! Plus had some space left over on top for a bag of rice or beans. My AWOL idea seems to be viable!
