Title: Air Compressor Motor RPM.
Post by: wilbilt on Jul 12, 2025, 11:31 AM
Am I alone in enjoying the sound of a 1725 RPM compressor motor?

Thunk,thunk,thunk,thunk,thunk,phssst!. Done.

My current compressor is a 60-gallon vertical with a 3450 RPM motor.

It goes, Waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!

I hate it.

I'm with you 100%. I was at a friend's shop a few months ago and the oil-less pump on his 60gal. compressor kicked in; HOLY CRAP!!!!!! I thought my ear drums would burst. That damn thing wouldn't have stayed a full hour in my shop.

I have a 60gal 3450rpm PUMA in my separate garage/shop. It's noisy but I keep it in a closet underneath the stairs and that makes it comfortable. For years I looked for a nice US made, low RPM two-stage unit, but I never was able to find one at a decent price. The PUMA was just good enough to keep me in business all these years and at this point in my life it's senseless to get one since my shop time is dwindling by the year.

I had that storage closet built underneath the stairs for just this purpose -- to get that damn compressor under wraps.

I have a California air, air compressor, that i am not sure of the speed, but it is quieter.  Then I have a Quincy, that puts out about the same as the above, but is larger, and ran part of an a/c air handler system that I found on Craigslist.

I also have a larger one that is the louder one, but am planning on setting it up in my brothers barn on the farm.  Since going to electric power tools, I do not need as much air, mostly (especially in my state), tire filling.

They make good quality stuff, but the pumps look like a modernized version of the old twin Thomas oil-less pumps that were produced in the US for decades. They were expensive and based on a continuous run design -- akin to the GAST units. IIRC the Gast units used vanes, while the Thomas design used a diaphragm.

I don't even have a compressor anymore. I never like the sound they make, and power tools, especially cordless, have come so far that I don't really need one. I have thought about getting one for tires, but I mainly work on bicycles now, and don't want one for that. Plus I keep the cars at good pressure with new tires, so I am OK there too.

Mine is a 60 gal upright Campbell Hausfeld compressor.  A bit noisy but nothing all that bothersome.  It's over thirty years old now.

I have a Kellogg 321TV 2 cylinder 2-stage compressor head that needs to be rebuilt. I also have a spare 60 gallon tank. The last time I looked, a rebuild kit for the Kellogg was about $175. Then I would need to source a quality 1725 RPM motor. Dayton?
I did find a chart online with motor/compressor pulley diameters to set the compressor RPM for the SCFM output desired.
I may go that route once I get some other projects completed.

I just don't like uneccessary noise.

I have been using air tools for 50 years and that is what I am invested in. Many of the cordless tools didn't exist for most of my working life. I do have a few cordless drills, but it seems the batteries fail to charge when you need them the most. Replacement batteries are expensive and can be difficult to find after the 'latest model' comes out.

I have corded electric drills, saws, angle grinders and impact wrenches. They have never let me down.
