After using the aluminum soft jaw for my 5" Columbian vise in my machine sop area. I picked up a 6" set for my Wilton located in another garage... Interesting how they spelled VICE on the packaging.

I am thinking likewise. I have that same vise and have been so pleased with the first set I got for my 3.5 jaw width vise that I have had it in mind to add a set for my larger vise too.

Would these work for clamping chromed cylinder rods in a vise without causing damage to the rod?

Indeed aluminum soft jaws are a favorable choice for clamping cylinder rods. Make sure the jaws do not have any in-bedded particles. And don't over tighten..
