Imagine being a gunner in that thing. That took some heavy balls to muster the courage to strap yourself into a seat that's hanging underneath the fuselage and is a prime target for enemy fire.
My Lord those guys had true dedication and courage -- plus given the space, the turret was manned by men with smaller builds. Simply amazing!
In this day hard to even imagine that. Surely little guys with a massive set of stones to load yourself in that contraption. I seem to recall reading that a number of guys died in those when the hydraulic systems were shot to hell and the ball could not be rotated into position for exit from the ball and forts had no option but a belly landing.
Difficult to imagine the horror of that situation.
