Those Sears Japan open end wrenches look like good starter sets for my nieces portable toolbox.  I figure that and a couple adjustable wrenches, would cover most of the types of things she does, but I would like to find what is a good brand and price I should be looking for a DBE wrench set.  I figure she may end up with mine soon enough, but trying to find something for her, now.

TIA

The old Sears branded tools are definitely quality stuff, but they're getting hard to find on eBay these days. They're also ridiculously priced given that they were budget tools to begin with.

Unless your niece is a stickler for vintage tools, the HF route may be the best option. I know it's blasphemy to say that on a forum such as ours, but I know many young mechanics who work in the trade and have mostly HF tools. They're making money and are satisfied with the performance.

When my daughter went off to college many years ago, she was looking to furnish and decorate her dorm room. I bought her a $39 HF toolkit and she's been thanking me ever since.
Somebody hold my beer.....

With the demise of Sears we have to make concessions. For me I still prefer used USA over import every time. That said, when I must by import like the recent 22 piece metric pattern wrench set for $145.00 I have landed on Gearwrench as my import brand of choice. I have never gotten comfortable visiting Harbor Freight and doubt I ever will. I  know they have gotten better,  but every time I go to a HF I sort of get the same dirty feeling I did entering a strip joint as a much younger man. It just wasn't me and I could not get comfortable with that. That best describes my feelings about HF.
Better hold onto something boys cause i'm fixin ta stand on it!

I may not worry too much.  Trying to go to my old home this week and see what I have for SAE Dual open end wrenches. (don't want to buy more if I already have some I could give her), did win a metric set, or DOE, and grabbing a 16x18mm to complete it (in her life more likely to deal with metric).

But lost 10 more pounds this last week, and finished up my pet scan just a bit ago.  New treatment, well is so new, no one knows what to expect (so I am THE guinea pig), so I am not expecting a whole lot of time left.
Sucks, because that was the ONE item from HF that I have always been generally impressed with, their larger toolboxes.  Now I need to figure out a home for that.
So she will end up with my DBE Craftsman professional ones, soon enough.

I bought some metric tools that I could have given her, but my plan for them was to give them to my friend that will end up with the VW (don't know what he has).  At the least, a road kit.
