Nice! I picked this on up at an estate sale on the last day, as I had seen it on the first day, and thought (hoped?) someone would buy it. But no one did, so I made a low ball offer and they accepted it. It is an AAMCO 6" from the thirties. I am still figuring it out, but it took a back seat when I picked up the little mill and then the lathe.

Kind of a side project, but know that the lathe is in its place, mostly, I need to clean up the rest of the shop, and get things organized.

it's kind of a disaster right now, but I am using that as an opportunity to make some necessary changes to how I have things laid out.

under the main bench

and under the second bench. I now have a much better use of space, and am in the process of going through all of the drawers and getting rid of all the misc. junk that accumulates over a decade. Having somewhat better organization of needed hardware

like having all of the boxed fasteners together, and things like that. As I do a lot of restoration work on older things, I like having a selection of age appropriate nuts, bolts and screws on hand.

Uncle Buck

Great progress! I am going through the same thing and it is very time consuming  for sure, but well worth the effort.

Just press on, it's all we can do right.
Better hold onto something boys cause i'm fixin ta stand on it!

Uncle Buck

LOL! How could I forget OCG! Yes it was a given that you would have a cherry " real shaper" in your shop! Oh my what a fine specimen it is too!

bmw, there are tons of old manuals on how to setup and operate a shaper to be found on the web.

Just make sure when you do get around to using it, pay it great respect and don't underestimate the potential for very severe injuries, even from small shapers. Those suckers pack ALOT of power, so just pay close attention getting use to it.

Good advise to remember. Thanks UB!

Looking forward to see the tidy workspace.

In the process of getting my shop into a working space, now that I have a much smaller footprint lathe, and being able to get all the things I have and want to use into places were I can do that, I am now in the clean-up/find-a-home stage, and this is uncovering all sorts of projects I wanted to get too/needed parts for etc.  So, to keep me motivated in the cleaning, I am doing some small side projects.

First, a handle for a drill index.

I have had this fractional index kicking around the shop, missing some things to make it work. It is supposed to have a brass ring around the top that shows which bit goes where, but as that is missing I don't mind making some changes. There is supposed to be a 3/8" threaded rod going up to some sort of handle, but as I don't have a handle with that mounting thread, I drilled it out and tapped for 7/16", put a long brass (as that is what I had sitting around) rod with a knob handle mounted on the other end. Perfect for being able to be grabbed from the back of the lathe bed when needed.

Next, finishing the arbor press.

I found the press at a flea market, but it had a piece of tubing for a handle. So, I eventually needed to put an order in with McMaster Carr, picked up a set of threaded steel balls and promptly got to threading the right size rod. Now it is as good as ever

I picked up this old Palmgren vise the other day at an estate sale

a bit rusty, I though I would spend some time getting it back to usable condition.

disassembled for cleaning

and all back together, looking much better.

Uncle Buck

I like that, all well done indeed!

Uncle Buck

Glad you are sharing this, I will be following closely. Beautiful machine and well worth the cost and effort to put it right.
