Santa pushed me into the 21st century -- Launch Diagnostic Tablet

At almost 70 years old, I've managed to work on my family and friends cars with just a good OBDII code tool. Which by the way is the Autel AL539B. Great scanner and it has a lot of extra diagnostic functions to make it very versatile --i.e. battery testing, multimeter, etc.

This Christmas Santa brought a great Launch Tablet that has a Bluetooth connection to the diagnostic port. No more wires and lines to worry about. Bi-directional control is what I needed, and this little unit is usually priced right around Black Friday. Mrs. Goodfellow persuaded Santa to put it in my stocking. Thanks Mrs. Goodfellow!

The LAUNCH X431 CRP919EBT Elite Scanner is a pretty powerful tool for the DIY mechanic and does most all of the things that the professional version does -- except for TPMS programming and it doesn't present a network topology view. Other than that it's a bargain. Updates are free for two years.

I don't worry too much about updates because all our cars are older, and I doubt that at my age I'll ever buy a modern rolling computer nightmare anyway. I'll stick with slightly older cars.
